Stuck in the Middle: Caught Between Expectations (544 words)

The pressure can feel relentless when you’re caught between senior leadership’s demands and your team’s expectations. You’re expected to deliver results, keep your team motivated, and navigate constant change—all without dropping the ball.  You’ve been told to be resilient—to “push through”, “tough it out”, and “keep going”. But what if resilience isn’t the answer? What if the key to success isn’t just bouncing back but adapting forward?

Resilience implies endurance—grit, toughness, and the ability to withstand challenges. But endurance alone isn’t enough in today’s fast-moving environment. The best leaders don’t just survive change; they leverage it. And that’s where adaptability comes in.

Why Adaptability Beats Resilience

  1. Resilience: Reacts, Adaptability: Anticipates: Resilient leaders recover from setbacks. Adaptive leaders anticipate them. If you’re always in reaction mode, you’re already behind. Instead of simply enduring change, ask: What’s next? What’s the opportunity here?
  2. Resilience Pushes Through, Adaptability Pivots: You’ve seen it before—leaders who push forward despite clear signs that a strategy isn’t working. Adaptive leaders know when to shift gears. They aren’t afraid to challenge outdated methods and try something new.
  3. Resilience Holds the Line, Adaptability Expands It: Resilience can make you dig in and resist, but adaptability allows you to expand your skill set, mindset, and approach. If you’re feeling stuck, it’s not about working harder—it’s about thinking differently.

The Adaptive Leadership Mindset

So how can you cultivate adaptability? Here’s where to start:

  • Reframe Challenges as Opportunities: Instead of asking, Why is this happening to me? ask, What can I learn from this? Adaptive leaders see obstacles as chances to innovate.
  • Develop a “What If” Habit: Regularly ask yourself and your team, What if we did this differently? What if we tried a new approach? This keeps you open to new possibilities.
  • Encourage Experimentation: Great leaders don’t have all the answers—they create an environment where their teams can test and learn. Foster a culture where employees feel safe to suggest and implement new ideas.
  • Stay Curious and Keep Learning: The best way to stay adaptive is to never stop learning. Read industry trends, take courses, and encourage your team to do the same. The more knowledge you have, the easier it is to pivot when needed.

Adaptability in Action: A Real-World Example

Let’s say your company is rolling out a new software system. The top-down directive is clear: “Implement it,” “Get your team on board,” and “Make it work.” You could be resilient, gritting your teeth and pushing forward even as employees struggle with frustration and inefficiencies.

Or you could be adaptive. You could:

  • Gather real-time feedback from your team.
  • Adjust training methods based on what’s working and what’s not.
  • Communicate upward about challenges and suggest improvements.

The result? A smoother transition, a more engaged team, and a reputation as a leader who navigates change, not just survives it.

FINAL THOUGHT: The Future Belongs to the Adaptive

In today’s business world, resilience alone won’t get and keep you ahead. Adaptability—the ability to pivot, learn, and evolve—separates great leaders from stagnant ones. So the next time you’re faced with a challenge, don’t just push through—find a way forward.
